Abstract

Observations have shown that economic and political interests are orchestrating movements that promote distrust in scientific institutions and the spread of fake news and information on social networks. Faced with this scenario of misinformation promotion, the nurturing of archaic ideas, and the discrediting of science, this study proposes the use of cinematic semiotics as tools for the development of technical-scientific thinking, mainly addressing the implications present in scenes as a means to broaden and facilitate debate. To this end, a strategy of bibliographic surveys from the rationalist author René Descartes and the semiotic investigation of the film “Creation,” based on the work of Charles Darwin, was adopted as the use of popular media that exposes the use of the scientific method in practice. As a result, an analysis is conducted on how the feature film contributes to critical sense and reason, also proposing how new films can be utilized for this purpose.
